Arguably the city’s most highly regarded institution, London School of Economics (LSE) boasts a rich history that includes 16 Nobel Prize winners since its formation in 1895. It proudly hosts students from over 140 countries, with over 100 languages spoken on campus. This cosmopolitan atmosphere will naturally attract many students, while its academic reputation is the third best in the UK.

LSE’s academic research also enjoys a very high standing among scholars, particularly in the fields of economics, law and social policy. As recently as 2008 it was credited with the highest percentage of world-leading research in the country.

Studies and Alumni

As you might expect from an institution famed for preparing the leaders of tomorrow, the range of subjects you can study at LSE is vast, varied and designed with the truly ambitious in mind.

Economics is clearly central to its academic focus, while students can also opt for courses in Philosophy, Government, Finance, Mathematics, International Relations, Languages, Law and Sociology. Students needn’t stick to just one of these either, with joint honours and majoring options available.

LSE’s reputation for academic excellence has seen it gain an intriguing array of alumni, including John F. Kennedy, Sir Mick Jagger, Sir David Attenborough, Shami Chakrabarti and Cherie Blair.

Even fictional characters want in on the action. Fans of US television drama The West Wing may be interested to know that the bio of President Jed Bartlet (played by Martin Sheen) reveals he has a Masters and PhD in Economics from LSE.

The university has also had its fair share of inspiring teachers, including former Prime Minister Clement Attlee and esteemed philosopher Bertrand Russell.

Accommodation for LSE Students

LSE’s main campus is located right at the heart of London, close to well known London locations such as Covent Garden, Strand and the Royal Courts of Justice. This is a very convenient and exciting location for students, particularly those who manage to secure accommodation nearby.
