Three London ice rinks to visit this winter

No-one's Christmas in London is complete without a glide (or a totter) around an ice rink. With the city being so large and spread-out, there are a good few places to ice skate. Here are three of our favourites.

Hampton Court Palace

For those who don't already know, Hampton Court was built in the early 16th century for one of Henry VIII's 'favourites', Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. When they fell out roughly 15 years after the palace was built, Henry VIII took it himself and expanded it somewhat.

Given its historical significance, it's long been one of London's most popular tourist attractions, and throughout December it will serve as an outdoor ice rink. If you've never been to Hampton Court before, we can't think of a better way to get acquainted with it. As well as the ice rink and the picturesque views, there will also be cafes to grab a bite to eat and stalls to get yourself a mulled wine.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Built around a stunning Victorian bandstand, the outdoor ice rink at Winter Wonderland is the largest in the country. It's illuminated with over 100,000 lights, which we're sure is enough to get anyone in the Christmas spirit. There's also a Carousel Bar, which is perfect for a post-skate drink.

However, there's a lot more to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland than just the rink and refreshments. With a spectacular circus show, a giant Ferris wheel, a Magical Ice Kingdom and countless Christmas market stalls, there's plenty to see and do. You could certainly spend an afternoon and evening taking everything in – and we insist you do.

London Eyeskate

As you might have guessed, this ice rink is situated right by the world-famous London Eye – and is therefore one of the most ideal places to skate in the whole city. As with the rinks at Hampton Court and Hyde Park, there are plenty of places nearby where you can get festive food, drinks and gifts.

If you haven't yet taken a ride on the Eye, you'll be pleased to know that you can actually buy a pass that gets you on the Eye as well as the ice rink – which activity you do first is up to you. Seeing

London from the top of Europe's tallest Ferris wheel is a spectacle all year round, but especially so on a night in December.
